“Building gold standard” – New parliament gets highest climate score

Date:

The recently renovated parliament building meets all climate standards. Attention was paid to energy efficiency and indoor air quality during the renovation. The house thus falls into the gold category in the “climate-active building standard”, developed by the Ministry of Climate Protection.

The Ministry of Climate Protection has developed the “Climate Active Building Standard” to promote climate-friendly new construction and renovations. It is available for residential and service buildings and provides specific support to real estate developers, architects and builders, housing developers and housing agencies of the states and anyone who builds, remodels or uses a home.

Three quality levels can be achieved. Gold is awarded to buildings that meet all the must-have criteria and reach 900 points. Silver is achieved with 750 points. For Bronze, all must-have criteria must be met. The climate-active gold plaque is therefore the highest award from the Ministry of Climate Protection for high-quality renovations.

As early as January 2014, after a hearing, the Parliamentary Directorate, in close consultation with the project management team responsible for coordinating the overall project, decided that the general renovation of the Parliament Building should be carried out according to the particularly demanding criteria of the Climate Protection Initiative “Klimaakiv” of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Protection in the field of energy efficiency and climate protection must also be planned and implemented according to the comprehensive quality criteria of the ÖGNB (Austrian Council for Sustainable Building).

Energy requirement reduced by 50 percent
Compared to the condition of the building before the renovation, the energy needs of the building determined according to the standards have been reduced by more than 50 percent. Completely renovated and highly efficient new windows, completely modernized construction technology and extensive quality assurance in the implementation are the main reasons for the quality achieved.

The lighting has been almost completely converted to modern LED technology and extensive energy and comfort monitoring also ensures that consumption is kept as low as possible during operation. Integrated product and chemical management was implemented during the renovation of the historic building and the creation of numerous new user areas (including Agora, Plenarium, restaurant on the top floor). This, as well as the high-quality ventilation technology, ensures that the indoor air is particularly low in harmful substances, even during full operation. Moreover, unlike before, parliament is now practically completely barrier-free.
