Following the file opened at Aita Mari, the PNV will ask the Spanish government in the Congress of Deputies what is being asked of it, why now and what measures it will take.

The Basque rescue ship Aita Mari risks a fine of more than one million euros in connection with various “irregularities” discovered on the ship during an inspection in 2020. In an interview with Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, the president of the Bizkai of the PNV Buru Batzar has stated that the Spanish government should pave the way for him rather than hinder his work. In this context, the PNV will ask the Spanish government in the Congress of Deputies what is being asked of it, why now after almost three years and what measures it intends to take.
Have the state authorities opened a disciplinary file against the humanitarian ship? #AitaMari.

In the background of these inspections Itxaso Atutxa sees an attempt by the Italian government to hinder the rescue efforts. According to him, the Italian government wants to divert the ships to the north, making rescues “more difficult, more expensive or even impossible”.
“The Italian government throws obstacles again and again. (The last file) is the result of an inspection that took place two years ago, and we can think about what can happen with the current government,” he explained.
