US Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Vienna-Schwechat on Friday with the second US state aircraft, the “Air Force Two”. The top politician will participate in a United Nations conference in Vienna.
Blinken is attending the annual conference of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna and will deliver a speech at 12:30 p.m. In the afternoon he meets Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (both ÖVP).
Austria was also represented at the drug conference
The focus of this year’s anti-drug conference includes the rampant opioid crisis in the US. According to the US State Department, Blinken is the first head of the US State Department to attend a meeting of the UN Drug Commission. Foreign ministers from numerous countries are taking part in the commission’s 67th meeting, which started yesterday Thursday and runs until next Friday (March 22), including the coca-growing countries of Colombia, Honduras and Ecuador. Austria will be represented on Friday by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), who will also give a speech.
Blinken will meet Nehammer and Schallenberg at the Federal Chancellery and hold a press conference with the Austrian foreign minister at 3:15 p.m. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller had earlier emphasized that the US and Austria are cooperating on humanitarian aid to Ukraine and on compliance with the EU’s economic sanctions against Russia. Both countries are also among Israel’s strongest supporters in the Middle East conflict.
