Criticism and prospects – Lower Austria elects a new state parliament on January 29

Date:

The party talks about the date of the upcoming state elections ended unsurprisingly: As reported, the signs pointed to January 29, 2023. The date has now been officially announced. However, the location of the presentation came as a surprise. And the way it was presented has already attracted criticism.

One cannot even speak of sparrows chirping from the rooftops: all parties – including the voters – had already prepared for an election date at the end of January. Last week, however, club head Klaus Schneeberger was officially instructed by the state governor to hold talks with all other parties in the state parliament. It was agreed on January 29, 2023.

Short election campaign after ‘working year’
This is hardly surprising, given that the People’s Party had declared 2022 the “Year of Work”, but recently generously handed out several optional candies. New funds and projects were presented every week and childcare, which was hotly debated across the country, was also reformed. This is of course also because the other parties, under the banner of the SPÖ, have already paced vigorously about a new support program.

So the signs already pointed to the search for new majorities if the ÖVP were to lose the absolute in the country. Officially, the election campaign should start in the new year after the Christmas holidays and then last about three weeks.

The first posters are already up
After the Neos, who already hung posters for their top candidate Indra Collini around the Hofburg elections, the PVV has already hung their subjects. And these are clearly aimed at Johanna Mikl-Leitner and her team. They want to “liberate the country from the stranglehold of the People’s Party” can be read under the image of the blue frontman Udo Landbauer. The SPÖ and the Greens have already committed to their representatives Franz Schnabl and Helga Krismer as top candidates.

Presentation at the Palais in the center of Vienna
By the way, the election date was presented on Thursday in the Palais Niederösterreich, which, as is known, is not located in Lower Austria at all. At the historic site in the center of Vienna, the People’s Party once again emphasized unity in the country in the 100th year of its blue-and-yellow independence. The much-requested “being together” also broke through several times. Judging by the facial expressions of the club representatives of all the other shades in attendance, not much will come of that during the election campaign.

To “Being Together”
The way the election date was announced alone sparked criticism in the opposition. “The election date for the state elections must be re-determined together,” Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasized in advance. Actually – because the political reality was apparently different. “The decision was made exclusively in the ranks of the People’s Party,” the opposition members complained. They were only invited to a joint meeting at the Palais, which was scheduled 30 minutes before the press conference (see fax above). Theoretically and officially it would have been time to object, but that wouldn’t have changed anything either.
