The former mayor of Alonsotegi (Bizkaia) Jose Luis Erezuma (PNV), which was awaiting trial, has passed away victim of an illness at the age of 63.
Last October was Discontinued the judgement for corruption to be held in the Bizkaia court between 2011 and 2015 against the former Alonsotegi councilor, as well as against two builders and two technicians – a sixth defendant died – due to the health problems of the former mayor.
The trial was pending, with no scheduled date, for the alleged crimes of embezzlement, government grant fraud, forgery and deceit for a case of false works paid for with government money.
A year ago, the defendants reached a agreement with the charges of returning the defrauded money and accepting a two-year sentence, meaning they would not go to prison and there would be no trial.
Well, the defendants failed to meet the payment schedule of the nearly million euros they had to pay, the case went ahead.
In that agreement, the defendants agreed to jointly return all the defrauded money, a total of 681,000 euros, plus 200,000 euros in interest, and assumed subterfuge and others of document forgery and fraud.
Before reaching that unfulfilled agreement, the prosecution alleged in connection with the case that in 2011 the defendants agreed to report an economic benefit to a construction company.
For example, the city council applied for a grant to repair an alleged damage from the rain, but in reality it used that item to pay the company that the city council was indebted to for a job done in 2008.
