Climbed on the roof – storming of the ÖVP headquarters: three perpetrators arrested

Date:

Three hooded people caused a commotion and a police operation on election Sunday at the ÖVP headquarters in St. Pölten. They climbed onto the building and threw leaflets. The perpetrators are said to be a 20-year-old from Tullner, a 21-year-old from Vienna and a 31-year-old from Krems.

Suspected right-wing extremists tried to storm the ÖVP headquarters in St. Pölten on Sunday. The three hooded men apparently climbed the fire escape onto the roof of the building. According to the police, they also damaged the building during their ascent. Then they unrolled a banner and threw pamphlets on the street.

The police immediately intervened and ended the action. The activists were arrested and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution investigated. The three right-wing extremists are currently being questioned. The trio is threatened with a complaint. “The ÖVP is the enemy of the Austrians,” it said. The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism is investigating.

Background unclear at the moment
If the perpetrators had been successful, they would have had access to the entire house through the door on the roof. Rapid intervention by the police prevented access to the interior of the building. The background to the action is currently unclear. Those arrested have not yet revealed to the police what they intended to do in the building. To which group the three belong is currently being investigated. The banner read something like “lock up politicians”. The party was accused of “voter fraud on the issue of border protection and migration”.

“Mr. Kickl’s friends were clearly on tour again. Right-wing extremists have once again shown the danger they pose to democracy. But we will never be intimidated by these right-wing extremists, their slogans and their hate-driven actions,” said Interior Minister Affairs Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).

According to information from the “Krone”, the SPÖ state party in St. Pölten was also warned that alleged far-right activists were on their way and also wanted to penetrate their headquarters.
