Consult with us! – Child pornography: do we need stricter punishments?

Date:

Following the Teichtmeister case, which should have come to court on Wednesday, politicians have announced higher sentences for possession of child pornography. Does that make sense or is it more likely to be treated? Katia Wagner talks about this with her guests on Wednesday 8:15 PM on krone.tv!

Actor Florian Teichtmeister is due to appear in court soon for possessing offensive images of children, but the first appointment has been cancelled. Teichtmeister confessed. He faces two years in prison if found guilty.

Teichtmeister could not go to prison
Whether he will ever spend a day in prison remains to be seen. Since the former director of the Burgtheater is impeccable and remorseful and also wants to confirm his confession in court, the chance of a suspended sentence is high. And that despite the fact that Teichtmeister has been hoarding images of child abuse for more than a decade…

Politicians now want these penalties to be tightened…
Due to public outcry over the imminent consequences of such a heinous act, the government is now planning tougher punishments. Anyone who has abuse material from minors (14 to 18 years) with them will now have to go to prison for a maximum of two years instead of last year. For younger people, the sentence is increased from the previous two to a maximum of three years. Those who hoard a particularly large amount of such data should also be punished more severely. Does this mean a Teichtmeister case can never happen again?

“Or two or three years shall not frighten a man”
Experts are critical of this. The Viennese men’s advisory service warns that a higher sentence will not deter pedophile offenders. On the contrary, therapies are necessary to prevent relapse. A look at Germany also shows the first experiences: the neighboring country tightened its laws in 2021 and set a maximum sentence of ten years – followed by overloading. Now the ministers of justice of the federal states are calling for defusing. The result would be a backward roll.

Do you want tougher penalties?
Should it be punished even harder as a symbol or should it be used elsewhere? That’s what experts will discuss on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. in a conversation with Katia Wagner on krone.tv! Join the conversation and tune in!
