Employees of the Askabide clinic have demanded the assistance of the institutions in the Basque Parliament in light of the “siege” suffered by both them and the women who come to their centers to exercise the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy ’40 days for life’in whose concentrations for the various headquarters of this clinic in Euskadi threats and expressions of “harassment” are made, according to what they have denounced.

They send expressions like “if we only catch you, you will see”, “those who kill, die” or “you get what you deserve”

A representative of the Askabide workers appeared this Wednesday before the Human Rights, Equality and Justice Commission of the Basque Parliament to expose, at the request of EH Bildu, the situation under which the staff of this clinic and the women who come for intermission their pregnancy as a result of the mobilizations of this anti-abortion collective in front of their centres Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao and Donostia-San Sebastian.

The representatives of the Askabide staff have explained that, despite the fact that these protests have been sporadic since 2014mobilizations were “intensified” in 2022.

Clinic staff have explained that these protests, which mainly affect their center in Vitoria-Gasteiz, are attended by people from all over Spain, for whom the organizers provide buses to travel.

In these concentrations, as they have explained, the expressions of “harassment” and threats against the workers and women who go to the clinics alternate with the silent prayers.

As an example, they have explained that they are called “murderers” and that they talk about phrases such as “if we only catch you, you will see”, “those who kill, die”, or “you get what you deserve”.

They feel ‘alone’ in a kind of ‘David vs. Goliath’ confrontation

For this reason, they have reported that “one hundred percent” of the people identified as a result of the complaints presented to the Ertzaintza by the clinic have already had a Restraining orderso you can’t get closer than 100 meters from the medical center.

However, they regret that the ’40 days for life’ movement, through its website, continues to call on people from all over Spain to travel to Vitoria-Gasteiz to continue concentrations for Askabide.

In this sense, they have explained that they feel “alone” in a kind of “David vs. Goliath” showdown, because they can’t dedicate themselves every day to going to the police station to file a complaint for every new entrant to these protests.

In addition, they have warned that given the proximity of the Easter, the initiators of these mobilizations are preparing new protests. “They don’t want to help women; they want, within a very right-wing political context, depriving women of a fundamental right and fundamentally protected by the law,” they denounced, referring to the protesters’ initiators.
