It is not the first time that there has been an allegation that Sebastian Kurz was surrounded by poles. The election of Kurz’s ex-press spokesman Etienne Berchtold as ambassador to Abu Dhabi was “politically motivated,” the Equal Opportunities Commission says. How did this result come about?
The Equal Opportunities Commission is very formalistic in its assessment. The fact is that the losing candidate has more years of service and is a head of department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Berchtold, on the other hand, gained experience at the permanent representation in Brussels. Officially, the lawyer had no diplomatic status at the time, although he did carry out diplomatic work. He now misses these years when counting. After that, Berchtold spent nine years with Kurz on all trips abroad.
Inferior sees “politically motivated” decision
In support of the “politically motivated” decision, the defeated candidate argues that he was ideologically discriminated against. What does that mean concretely? The opponent left the Austrian workers’ association (ÖAAB) a few years ago.
And now it gets exciting: later he was an adviser to Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who bowed to Vladimir Putin at her wedding and still sympathizes with Russia.
