Currently, 378,213 people are registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) as unemployed or in training. 305,204 of them are looking for work, 73,009 are in training. “Compared to the same period in 2022, there are currently 11,974 fewer people unemployed or in training. The gap shows that the labor market remains stable despite the economic downturn,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP).
The comparison with the pre-crisis period is particularly good. “In mid-February 2020, shortly before the outbreak of the Covid pandemic, the number of job seekers was 31,311 higher than today. In the same period of 2021, this number was 145,888 people higher than now,” Kocher calculated in a broadcast today.
“Short-time work no longer matters”
Pre-registrations for short-time work are still declining and counted 829 people in 13 companies this week. “This development shows that short-time work no longer plays a significant role in securing employment due to the still good situation on the labor market,” emphasizes Kocher.
For the influx of employees, the minister refers to figures from the Austrian Business Agency (ABA), according to which in 2022 some 6,350 companies and foreign jobseekers will have been helped to apply for the red-white-red card.
