With the transition to the device-independent household rate, inspection visits by GIS employees are also canceled. This means a significant reduction in areas of responsibility. Therefore, not only the ORF, but also the fairy daughter is facing cutbacks.
According to reports, the fee information service will be significantly reduced. As for the ORF, managing director Roland Weißmann presented his savings plans for the public media company on Monday afternoon as part of a special finance committee to the board of directors – also requested by politicians. Savings of around 300 million euros are reported by the end of 2026. The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO), the specialized channel ORF Sport+ and the streaming platforms Flimmit and fidelio are currently traded as joke candidates.
The request of the Minister of Media
The savings at ORF are not only necessary because of increased costs. Media Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) repeatedly pushed for a “hard austerity course” for the ORF so that it would be cheaper for the population and linked the demand to negotiations with the Greens on a device-independent household contribution, which would increase the current GIS fee for televisions and as a replacement for radio. The ORF funding must be reorganized by 2024 on the basis of a decision of the Constitutional Court. The pure streaming use of ORF offers should therefore be subject to a fee in the future.
