Among the measures, the withdrawal of the title of favorite son of the Province and the abolition of the appointment of honorary chairman of the Provincial Council are particularly striking.

The Provincial Council of Government of the Diputación de Guipuzkoa has accepted the recognitions, awards and those associated with the increase of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The measures include, among other things, the withdrawal of the favorite son title of the province granted to Franco, approved by agreement of July 1, 1939, and the abolition of the appointment of honorary president of the Provincial Council, approved July 23, 1945.
Along with them, other recognitions, awards and honors bestowed during Franco’s dictatorship that are “manifestly incompatible with the democratic values and with fundamental rights and freedoms, and that presupposes an increase in military insurrection, war or dictatorship,” as emphasized by the formal spokesman, Eider Mendoza.
At a press conference, Mendoza explained that, in April 2022, before the approval of the Democratic memory law and in anticipation of this, the Provincial Council commissioned the historian Iñigo Imaz Martínez to conduct an investigation.
The purpose of this work was to search for documentary references on the appointments between 1937 and 1975 in favor of the dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco Bahamonde and other honorary titles awarded to important persons or groups. This report, received in September 2022, has been shared by the Provincial Council with the General Assemblies.
