In a week it will be over again: the state elections in Carinthia. Major changes are not expected: “Peter Kaiser (SPÖ) remains number one. The much more interesting question is what will happen next in the federal government,” Erich Vogl, domestic politics editor at “Krone” told moderator Conny Winiwarter. After election day, the internal power struggle for the SPÖ leadership will enter a new round. What is party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner doing wrong? “She’s not coming over.”
If you met former mayor Häupl at a sausage stand, it would probably be realistic to lead with “a splash and a sausage”. Vogl knows from insider circles that it is not authentic enough and lacks connection with the people.
On losses: “Keep feeding the power shift”
But not only Pamela Rendi-Wagner is currently lacking in qualities. Vogl: “Even in the second row there are no powerful people”, by which he means, for example, Jörg Leichtfried or Christian Deutsch. The fact is: “If the SPÖ loses the elections in Carinthia, it will further fuel the debate about a change of power.”
Doskozil or Babler?
Someone who has long had an eye on Rendi-Wagner’s chair is the governor of Burgenland, Hans Peter Doskosil. He polarises, has both opponents and supporters. However, unlike Rendi-Wagner, he can also “score in the countryside”. Andreas Babler “politely states that he is not satisfied with the top team.” But Vogl doesn’t believe he will play a part “in the red Lodge.”
Triple coalition without Kaiser? “Then It Gets Inconvenient”
The elections in Carinthia will leave Governor Peter Kaiser relatively unscathed. Exceptional case: if a three-party coalition goes out without the SPÖ. “Then it becomes uncomfortable,” summarizes the expert in domestic politics. The FPÖ will be able to take second place, “Team Carinthia may be ahead of the ÖVP.” Things are getting tight for the Greens and Neos: “Carinthia lacks the urban environment.” Because that’s where most of their voters would be at home.
