State elections Carinthia – preferential votes, state parliament and Co: Important information about the elections

Date:

The election campaign is over, the election is just around the corner; but what is especially important in “making a cross”? And what are the tasks of the Carinthia state parliament?

On Sunday, March 5, we elect the state parliament of Carinthia; The parliament of our state, therefore, has exactly 36 seats. These seats will be distributed among those parties that receive at least five percent of the vote tomorrow (keyword: five percent hurdle). SP, VP, FP and Team Carinthia are currently represented in the state parliament (see image below), but that may now change – depending on the number of votes, the seats of the state parliament are divided between the parties.

How does preference voting work?
However, if you tick your box, you still have an option: each voter can cast three preferential votes and therefore especially want a mandate to be awarded to a special person and thus influence the list order. But beware: preference votes can only be given to candidates from the chosen party!

The politicians who are sworn in as members of parliament after the elections represent the Carinthian population, are responsible for state laws, elect the presidents of the state parliament, federal councilors and representatives of the state government. Usually the party with the most votes – to be precise; the state parliament club with the most members – the governor of the state.

The meetings of the state parliament take place in the manor house of Klagenfurt, in the conference room behind the main armory. They are public, so you can visit them – the viewer’s gallery is quite small, so it makes sense to register.

The secret of the small staircase
Incidentally, 665 painted coats of arms can be seen in the Great Coats of Arms Room. It was designed by the most important baroque painter of Carinthia, Josef Ferdinand Fromiller (1693-1760), after a fire in 1723. In addition to the large one, there is also the small coat of arms hall with 298 painted coats of arms. The manor itself, located between Heiligengeistplatz and Alter Platz, was built between 1574 and 1594. During World War II, it became the seat of the Carinthian Gau. There were no direct bombings, but the facade and roof were damaged.

After the Nazi period, the British occupation seized the manor and it was not until 22 July 1948 that the state parliament met again in the boardroom. Funny: in the courtyard of the manor there is a small stone staircase in front of the south tower, which was originally used to facilitate the mounting of the horses.
