After wooden parts of a planned asylum accommodation were set on fire, those responsible are now being sought. Politicians condemn the crime, but have no solutions ready either. Only the FPÖ has not yet responded to the attack.
The background to the arson attack on Lunzerstrasse in Linz is still unclear. The fire broke out around 6 p.m. Saturday. Wooden parts of a planned accommodation for asylum seekers had been set on fire. The Linz fire brigade quickly had the fire under control. The police are now investigating because fires had been set in at least two places.
look for culprits
Meanwhile, politicians shift the responsibility onto each other. The mayor of Linz, Klaus Luger, condemned the act, but held the state of Upper Austria responsible. He spoke out against additional housing in Linz, because the city is already disproportionately meeting its admission requirements. Integration State Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP), who is responsible for construction, in turn sees the need for the EU. “The primary goal should be to reduce the influx of illegal migrants to Austria, this can only be achieved at European level,” he says. At the same time, he demands: “The perpetrators must be investigated and their actions must have consequences.”
“Devastating Act”
Green Linz city councilor Eva Schobesberger also expressed outrage at the arson attack: “This must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” Regardless of how one thinks about the location of Lunzerstraße, it is a devastating act when an arson attack is carried out on an upcoming accommodation for people seeking asylum. Only the FPÖ did not comment on the arson. Meanwhile, some residents in Lunzerstrasse are annoyed. They wrote a letter to LH Vice Manfred Haimbuchner in late January, but received no reply.
Police are asking for information from the public. This is available at any police station or from the permanent service of the LKA Upper Austria on 059/133-40 3333.
