The official results of the state elections in Carinthia, which the state election authority confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, brought a small surprise. Meanwhile, 344 “new” votes have been added to the provisional result of Sunday evening.
As the head of the state’s election authority, Gerhard Jesernig, said when asked by APA, one city had forgotten to add the votes by mail on Sunday. However, this does not have a major impact on the election results.
Error in the city of Bleiburg
Sunday night’s provisional final result was 307,090 votes cast – the final result, published Wednesday afternoon, was 307,434, or 344 more votes. The simple explanation: an error occurred during the addition, and: in the municipality of Bleiburg in constituency two (Carinthia East) they forgot to add the votes by post on Sunday evening to the result.
“For this reason, we do the calculations at the election authority and the error was immediately discovered,” explains Jesernig. In constituencies one and three the result remained completely the same, in constituency four it was “about one vote”.
No influence on the election result
However, the error had no concrete consequences, the head of the authority emphasized: neither in the percentage of the official final result on Sunday evening, nor in the distribution of mandates.
Politician casts his vote twice
On Wednesday, the electoral authority of the state of Carinthia discussed Rosental’s municipal politician, who reportedly voted twice in the state elections. “The mandatary has put his check mark on the ballot both on the day of the primaries and on Sunday,” the “Krone” was confirmed. “Since it was clearly left unchecked, it was noticed too late.”
Participation in the elections is excluded
Under the electoral law, barring the election is precluded because one vote would not change the outcome of the election. “After all, no fewer than 430,000 Carinthians voted. Still, I have to say that in all these years I have never seen such a double election,” says Gerhard Jesernig, head of the Electoral Authority, shaking his head. “Since we assume intent in the double election, the case is now forwarded to the Prosecution.”
