“Recognized Expert” – Christine Steger is the new Disability Lawyer

On Saturday, Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens) appointed Christine Steger as the new advocate for people with disabilities in Austria. She succeeds Hans Jörg Hofer, who passed away in September 2022 while in office. Previously, Steger chaired the independent monitoring committee for overseeing the rights of people with disabilities.

The feature was made public at the end of 2022. Steger was selected from a total of 19 candidates and has now been confirmed by Rauch. “With Christine Steger, a recognized expert who has been campaigning for the rights of people with disabilities for almost 20 years will take over the representation of people with disabilities in Austria,” Rauch said in a broadcast. “Today, for the first time, a woman will take on this important role. Thank you in advance for your efforts and I look forward to working with you.”

Chairman of the Independent Monitoring Commission since 2018
Steger, 43, has been head of the Department of Family, Gender, Disability & Diversity at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg for many years. In this position, she was involved in creating barrier-free teaching, learning and working conditions and in projects for the equality of university members with disabilities and conflict mediation, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs. Since 2018, she has chaired the independent monitoring commission that analyzes the human rights situation of people with disabilities in Austria and monitors the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“Christine Steger’s nearly 20-year commitment to the rights of people with disabilities is a testament to her commitment. I am pleased that she can now use her experience as a disability advocate and directly support people with disabilities,” said Rauch .
