According to the Public Employment Service (AMS), unemployment in Austria fell “further” in February. There was a decrease of about 7,000 people, or 1.9 percent, to 369,769 people who are unemployed or in AMS education.
According to national calculations, the unemployment rate has fallen to 7 percent, the lowest level since 2008, the AMS announced on Wednesday. The number of vacancies has clearly fallen. But there are also more young unemployed.
The numbers are likely to rise again soon
AMS boss Johannes Kopf also pointed to an increase in unemployment in the construction industry. “However, the higher unemployment in construction is probably also partly due to the winter conditions, so we see a worse development in southern Austria, where more snow has fallen,” says Kopf.
“I suspect that the decline in total unemployment will come to an end for the time being at the end of March. Forecasts predict a slight rise in unemployment this year and a fall again in 2024. That would be nice, but the shortage of skilled workers will remain with us, said the AMS-Boss.
