Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) has called for “significantly” more pressure regarding the European Commission’s negotiations with corona vaccine manufacturers over contract changes. These companies “earned very, very well and now that the situation is good”, there must be a new arrangement.
For example, Bulgaria had announced that it immediately wanted to terminate the contract with BioNTech / Pfizer, according to which the country is obliged to buy vaccines by 2025. While Austria is in favor of a “negotiated solution, it is clearly in favor of increasing the pressure,” Rauch stressed before an EU meeting in Brussels on Monday. It should come to “solutions that are also justifiable” for the taxpayer.
He does not want to “breach contract”, but when the terms and conditions change, there must be a willingness to make “commitments” that allow for both: renegotiation of the contractual items and good future cooperation.
Little demand for vaccinations
With the corona pandemic abating, there is now an oversupply of Covid-19 vaccines worldwide. In the EU, most residents who wanted to be vaccinated against Corona received a start and repeat vaccination. The demand for further vaccinations is low.
