Poverty is on the rise – time is of the essence: rent brakes can come now

Date:

Against the background of inflation, the parliamentary clubs of the governing parties are eagerly negotiating a rent ceiling.

“I certainly see opportunities that an agreement will still be reached,” said Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) on Wednesday in the press foyer after the cabinet meeting. “Time is of the essence here,” warned Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) about Tempo.

An increase of 8.6 percent is imminent
If the government does nothing, an 8.6 percent increase in benchmark rents for old buildings is due on April 1. A sticking point in the negotiations so far was that the People’s Party wanted to combine the rent brake with a transfer tax exemption of 500,000 euros, which the Greens did not like.

It is important to the ÖVP that measures related to a restructuring offensive are also being negotiated, and Brunner confirmed that ownership is a concern of the People’s Party. It is clear to them that a good solution is needed, because rents have risen rapidly, which is a problem for many families, Gewessler emphasized. Time is of the essence.

Regulations to prevent extortionate prices
The rent brake is a legal measure intended to regulate an increase in rents and ensure affordable housing. According to experts, against the background of the tight housing market, the measure can provide more justice and give tenants more rights. Because the landlords have to be guided by the normal prices and are only allowed to increase the rents by a small percentage.
