State Election 2023 – Many crises are reshuffling the election cards

Date:

Asylum, climate, pandemic, war and inflation. Triste themes determine the state elections in Salzburg. Who has the best chance?

The citizens of Salzburg are teetering from one crisis to another. Not all problems can be solved at national level. But whoever presents the best recipes also has the best cards for the state elections.

THE OVP has supplied the provincial governor in Wilfried Haslauer for ten years. His people’s party has succeeded in getting the finances in order and strengthening the location. The 37.8 percent of 2018 – at the time of Chancellor Kurz – no longer seems realistic today. The problems in the healthcare sector and the housing market are too great – the climate targets have not been achieved. In addition, politicians have a trust problem. According to polls, the ÖVP is threatened with a minus of about five percent. First place will be retained.

THE SPÖ has not found its feet since the financial scandal and lost twice in a row. In 2018, the Social Democrats only got 20 percent. It is hoped that this will change with a boy at the helm. David Egger barely managed to present himself well. In addition, there is the leadership debate in the federal government, as a result of which the SPÖ drops to 17 percent in polls.

THE FPÖ is the beneficiary of multiple crises and flagging major parties. Worries and fears are driving voters to the Party for Freedom, which scored particularly well on the asylum issue and the pandemic. The rival of Marlene Svazek (FPS under Schnell) is a thing of the past. According to the study, it should come second with 25 percent. MFG and WIRS cost the FPÖ almost no votes.

THE GREEN They can hardly point to successes after ten years of government participation. The air years 80 are over, not a single wind turbine is still running and there was also a health care scandal. Martina Berthold is certainly a trickier junior partner than her predecessor. The consequences of the climate crisis play into her hands. In polls, however, they hold their place.

THE NEOS were able to make some progress in education with State Councilor Andrea Klambauer. However, she was criticized for breaking up the women’s shelters and for her housing policies. The seven percent of 2018 is manageable again.

THE KPO PLUS has replaced the KPÖ and with Kay-Michael Dankl there is a real chance to get into the state parliament. The city council of the city of Salzburg scores with a citizen-oriented policy and a strong emphasis on housing.
