the lehendakari, Inigo Urkullu, this Friday called for seeking “the greatest possible consensus to implement a legally viable project that would allow a specific approach for progress in Basque self-government to be approved in a referendum”. Under the full control of the Basque Parliament, he has replied to EH Bildu that “it is not a question of taking a step, but of moving forward step by step”.
During today’s session in the Basque Parliament, the parliamentarian EH Bildu, Maddalena Iriartehas asked the lehendakari about the need to “institutionalize” the right to decide to “ensure it in the future”, and appreciates the “broad” agreement reached last Thursday between the PNV, EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Podemos -IU to claim that constitutional reform includes the right to decide.
In his response, Urkullu also referred to the compromise amendment approved last Thursday in the Basque Parliament, which “proposes to standardize the right to decide in case of constitutional reform”.
To “proceed” in the field of self-government, the Lehendakari has proposed three steps: “continue to develop Basque self-government; effectively agree on the starting point for work on the self-government document, a step that will be in the hands of the parliamentary groups; and work to achieve, within the European Union, greater recognition of the rights of peoples and nations without states such as Euskadi”.
“The future of the Basque Country is in Europe and it is with Europe. We permanently apply European directives. Within this framework, an area of action is to work towards the recognition of the nations that, beyond the states, are part of the European Union” , has indicated.
