Alexander Lukashenko, ruler of Russia’s puppet state of Belarus, fears Vladimir Putin could order the use of nuclear weapons. He therefore calls for an immediate ceasefire “without preconditions” between Russians and Ukrainians on Friday.
The conflict must be resolved before it escalates further, Lukashenko said in a speech to his people on Friday. If Russian leaders saw the risk of the country collapsing, they would use their “most terrible weapons,” Reuters quoted the Belarusian dictator as saying.
“All territorial issues, reconstruction, security and other issues must and can be resolved at the negotiating table,” Lukashenko said.
Lukashenko expects Ukrainian counter-offensive
At the same time, he accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of being unwilling to negotiate and warned him about the widely anticipated Ukrainian counter-offensive. This would make negotiations between the governments in Moscow and Kiev impossible.
Putin stationed nuclear weapons in Belarus
Putin announced this weekend the stationing of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Russia does not violate the international non-proliferation treaty because it has no control over the weapons itself. Putin pointed out that the United States has also stationed nuclear weapons with allies in Europe. “We’re just doing what they’ve been doing for decades.”
Belarus accuses NATO of agreeing to deploy Russian nuclear weapons. The government in Minsk was forced to do so because of the aggressive actions of the NATO countries, which threaten security, according to the foreign ministry.
