About a year before the European elections, the “Krone” met EU MP Lukas Mandl (ÖVP) for an interview. He reveals which election dates are currently being traded, how he feels about fellow party member Othmar Karas and how EU agendas are assigned to Udo Landbauer.
“crown”:Mr Mandl, what is your personal goal for the European elections, which will take place in about a year?
Luke Mandl: My aim is to avoid foreign influence in the European Union – I work here in the relevant special committee in the European Parliament. We have experience with Brexit, the Trump election and the elections in France and Germany. It’s about defending democracy. It’s not election day yet. I also think it is important that many people participate. We are the only country in the EU where 16-year-olds are allowed to vote. A strong turnout is good for a functioning democracy.
