KPÖ top candidate Kay-Michael Dankl could surprise the elections in Salzburg. His secret to success.
Archery is his hobby. So it almost makes sense that he cites Robin Hood as his role model. The dark red avenger Dankl leads the battle against luxury housing prices in Salzburg. With the successful concept from Graz, the communist is about to shake up the Salzburger Land again.
Left-wing populism with potential
His entry into the state parliament certainly looks like election Sunday to him. Left-wing populism has voter potential again: the KPÖ in Graz, Marco Pogo in the Hofburg elections and Andreas Babler in the state elections in Lower Austria all proved this.
The 34-year-old from Salzburg follows an interesting strategy: in underprivileged districts such as Salzburg-Lehen, where the disenchantment with politics is particularly great, he wants to appeal to non-voters. “And he’s an excellent communicator,” says political expert Thomas Hofer.
“Golf for everyone!”
Dankl’s provocative way of posting appeals. In a video, the KPÖ’s top candidate calls for “Golf for all!” With this, he takes on the role of the posh golf club that pays only 1,200 euros per month for 160,000 square meters of space in the middle of the city. “An average family wouldn’t even get an apartment in Salzburg for this rent,” says Dankl.
“Certificate of poverty for the SPÖ”
“The success of the KPÖ is a sign of poverty, especially for the SPÖ. After all, the SPÖ provided the governor,” Hofer criticized.
