The British Ministry of Defense accidentally published the data of Afghan local forces. For fear of the Taliban, they brought thousands into the country. The media were not allowed to report on this.
According to a strictly judicial order for dealing with the scandal, the secret program (“Afghanistan Response Route”), which costs up to one billion euros, has not yet been reported.
According to earlier knowledge, an employee of the Ministry of Defense sent an e -mail with an explosive data set outside the SAFE government system at the beginning of 2022.
Parts of the information about around 19,000 people who recently applied for the recently completed official resettlement and support program for Afghans appeared on Facebook.
“List of dead”
The people who had supported the UK on the spot in the fight against the Taliban were struck and after the Taliban had taken over, protection and refuge in 2021. As the PA press agency reports, up to 100,000 people could be hit if the respective family members were admitted. A helper from the official program therefore spoke about a “murder list” for the Taliban, supplied by the British government.
The existence of the problem was kept secret
The Ministry of Defense only became aware of the data leak in August 2023 – and then was forced to act. The judicial order, which is now also criticized heavily, was obtained the prohibition of only reporting on the existence of the problem in the same year in order not to attract the Taliban even more attention to the data.
An expert concluded last month that the data record no longer has the greatest relevance for the Taliban. Defense Minister John Healey said on Tuesday in parliament that the data dropout had a heavy burden, he asked for an excuse.
According to the information, 4,500 people from Afghanistan have been brought to Great Britain, around 900 applicants from the official program and 3,600 family members. So far, the costs must be around 460 million euros. The total costs of the program can be considerably outside the limit of billion dollars due to possible compensation claims.
