Salzburg elections – Chancellor Nehammer sees ‘minus victory’

Date:

The state elections in Salzburg bring nothing to celebrate for the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS in the federal government. Nevertheless, ÖVP Chancellor and Federal Party Chairman Karl Nehammer sees a “victory with a minus”. The governor of Salzburg, Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP), has achieved his goal – namely to remain first, Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized at the election party of the People’s Party after the state elections in Salzburg. However, it is a result that the federal party must also think about. As chancellor, he did not want to get involved in finding a coalition in Salzburg, he told journalists.

Nehammer sees a trend in the election results. The People’s Party also lost percentages in the state elections in Lower Austria. Those who bear political responsibility would face people’s fears due to various crises such as inflation, the war in Ukraine or the pandemic, while those who offer simple solutions to complex questions – “right and left” – would be in this situation taking advantage. The electoral success of the communists “causes me,” said the chancellor. He wants to show people “through honest politics” that “we take their concerns seriously”.
