Talk to Katia Wagner – “There is a high risk that the war will spread in 2023”

Date:

Not only the big annual overview on krone.tv is not very positive, also the outlook for the coming year. Russia could launch a new military offensive as early as spring. Colonel Michael Bauer of the Armed Forces also warns in a conversation with Katia Wagner: “The biggest threat in 2023 is that the war in Ukraine will spread.”

According to the risk report for next year, the experts of the armed forces have identified 73 possible threats. By way of comparison, in 2019 there were “only” 25 possible scenarios that would shake our security. Of particular concern: the “biggest threat” in 2023 is that “the Russian attack, direct or indirect”, will expand. Fear is already spreading that Putin could also be eyeing the Baltic states or Moldova. “We estimate the danger to be high,” said army spokesman Michael Bauer.

2023 is still going to be expensive, only better in 2024
The economic outlook for 2023 is also quite poor. Franz Schellhorn, economic expert and director of Agenda, is sure that next year will not be any easier. “Prices will remain high, from 2024 it will only get better,” he predicts. In any case, the measures taken by the federal government would not help us through the crisis, because: “We only charge the electricity and gas bills,” says Schellhorn. He says, “Ultimately, it’s taxpayers and future generations who pay for it.”

‘Nehammer is not comfortable in the role of chancellor’
The editor-in-chief of the Kronen Zeitung, Klaus Herrmann, is also sure that “one day the big austerity package” will come. His domestic record this year is mixed. Chancellor Nehammer “is struggling to find his footing”. “In 2022, you didn’t always feel like he was comfortable in his role,” Herrmann sums up. His visit to Vladimir Putin was not a glamorous performance either. The editor-in-chief still doesn’t know “what that was supposed to be”. He advises against any further attempt at diplomacy, because “Putin and Selenskyj will certainly not meet in Vienna to make peace,” according to his prognosis.

Tip for Doskozil: “Be man enough to get up!”
According to pollster and political expert Christoph Haselmayer, it is premature to write off the ÖVP despite the failed year 2022. “Take valerian and stay calm,” he advised the government. The polls are “not good” at the moment, especially for the ÖVP, but “a lot can happen” before the next National Council elections in 2024, even though there will certainly be a few more “pawn casualties” resignations. He also has advice for Hans Peter Doskozil: “Be man enough to get up!” Doskozil has to look Pamela Rendi-Wagner in the eye and say: “You can’t do it, I can do it!” – and against her as the top candidate for the run-up to the next election.
