Serbia kept its word – Asylum: “Gateway” was closed on New Year’s Eve

Date:

The Federal Chancellery has to report another negotiation success on the subject of refugee movements: Serbia – after visits by Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (both ÖVP) – prevented visa-free entry for Indians on January 1, 2023. However, most Indians have moved on anyway.

Serbia had closed the “entrance gate for Indians” on New Year’s Day, the BKA said in a martial tone. The dThe third largest asylum group immediately needs a visa for the flight to Belgrade. As reported, the visa exemption for Tunisians was already lifted by Serbia in November – now Belgrade has also kept its word to the Indians.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was also involved in talks with Serb Aleksandar Vučić in October. Thousands of refugees have so far come to Belgrade by plane without a visa and continued their journey through smugglers on various routes – mostly via Hungary, which accepted only 43 asylum seekers in 2022.

The visa freeze is now expected to have a major impact on the movement of refugees towards Austria. “The example of Tunisia shows that the visa requirement works. While there were still about 2,500 applications in October, after the expiry of the visa requirement there was a decrease of about 93 percent. A similar development can also be expected for asylum applications from Indians,” said the State Chancellery.

‘Asylum brake shows effect’
Chancellor Nehammer literally: “The asylum brake is having an effect. The end of visa freedom is another important step in the fight against illegal migration. In particular, intensive talks with Serbian President Vučić made this success possible.” Karner added that the measure also “the smugglers mafia will be limited the basis for their inhumane business”.

99 percent of Indians move on
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar’s visit to Austria and an agreement to take back Indian asylum seekers was also celebrated with great fanfare this week – krone.at reported. A closer look shows that of the 18,000 Indians who traveled to Austria last year, only a fraction stayed here. Currently, 8,551 procedures are still ongoing, 6,530 have been stopped and 3,664 asylum applications have been rejected.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, there are 240 Indians in basic care. That equates to just over one percent. The figures for deportations from the country are comparable. By the end of November 2022, a total of 300 Indians had been repatriated.

These figures show that almost all Indians move on. They often work as extra earners in the Italian, French or Spanish agricultural industry. However, the large travel movement of 2022 must be over by January 1.
