Greenpeace is sounding the alarm on the occasion of the climate protection scenario recently drawn up by the Federal Environmental Service. Consequences of the “massive climate protection blockade of the ÖVP under Karl Nehammer”, according to the environmental protection organization. The Chancellor “has only the next election in mind, but with his limited horizon he is putting our climate future at risk”.
Only in 2050, 20 years too late, will Austria meet the legally binding EU reduction target. In 2030, approximately 42 million tons of greenhouse gases are expected to be emitted outside of emissions trading. That is about 12 million tonnes more than the EU target for Austria (minus 48 percent compared to 2005).
The climate protection scenario proves that Austria’s previous measures are definitely inadequate and that Austria will fall well short of the EU’s 2030 target. It also clearly shows the devastating consequences of the massive climate protection blockade of the ÖVP under Karl Nehammer. Greenpeace called on Chancellor Nehammer to set the course for real climate protection and to pass urgently needed bills.
“The scenario is a clear wake-up call for the government: long-overdue laws, such as the Renewable Heat Act and the Climate Protection Act, must be passed immediately to catch up on climate targets. to achieve,” says Jasmin Duregger, climate advocate. and energy expert. The government is also a long way from climate neutrality, i.e. an economy with almost no emissions that are harmful to the climate.
