The head of the Medical Association, Johannes Steinhart (68), who has recently come under increasing internal criticism, has temporarily stepped down as president of the Vienna and Austrian Medical Associations for health reasons. This was announced by the professional representation on Tuesday afternoon.
In accordance with the legal provisions, the 1st Vice President Stefan Ferenci will temporarily take over the affairs in the Chamber of Vienna. In the Austrian Medical Association, this is done according to the broadcast of the 1st Vice President Harald Schlögel. It was not until June 2022 that Steinhart was elected president of the Austrian Medical Association, succeeding Thomas Szekeres.
Second failure in a few weeks
The outage, which is already the second in a few weeks, could last a long time this time, the “Kurier” reports, citing a spokesman. Due to cardiological problems, 68-year-old Steinhart is currently in hospital. Long-term rehabilitation may be required after current treatment.
Chamber: Failure not related to multimillion-dollar scandal
Recently, Steinhart came under pressure over a million-dollar scandal involving a subsidiary. In no way, the spokesman insisted, did Steinhart’s failure have anything to do with it.
An extraordinary general meeting of the Vienna Medical Association will take place on Wednesday evening. It was convened because of the inconsistencies that have recently become known in connection with “Equip4Ordi” (E4O), a subsidiary of the Curia of resident doctors.
These include questionable premium payments and credit transactions. After Steinhart was president of the curia until last year, he recently came under heavy fire. He has repeatedly denied all allegations of involvement against him.
