Nursing apprenticeships for young people will start in three states in the fall in response to the shortage of skilled workers. With this you are able to do the training to become a nurse or nursing assistant. Ministers Martin Kocher (ÖVP) and Johannes Rauch (Greens) presented the main points on Wednesday morning.
Nursing training should be possible as a training pilot in the states of Vorarlberg, Upper Austria and Lower Austria from autumn and will be externally evaluated by a scientific institution seven years after its introduction. When they are fully developed, there will be up to 1,000 pupils, Kocher reported after the Council of Ministers. The plan is to have classes in all states in the future. For example, training centers will be hospitals and nursing homes, Kocher said.
Minimum age 17 years
Young people are protected insofar as they are only allowed to care for patients directly from the age of 17. This is an age-appropriate entry, Rauch said. The youngsters would be gradually introduced. In the beginning, there is a particular push in the social and communicative areas, such as helping to shape the daily structure.
More than 76,000 nursing staff needed by 2030
The Minister of Labor explained the need to create further training when looking for personnel. Although there are 1.5 percent more employees working in the care sector than a year ago, the number of vacancies has actually increased – an effect of the aging population. Gesundheit Österreich GmbH’s nursing demand forecast recently calculated that more than 76,000 nursing staff would be needed by 2030.
