The government is celebrating “an anti-inflation programme”: rent caps, rate freezes and crisis winners held accountable. Does it sound like those suffering from rising rents, fixed costs and energy prices can finally breathe a sigh of relief? Unfortunately not, as a quick analysis shows.
Just the night before an unpleasant special session – convened by the SPÖ and FPÖ – on inflation, the government presented a program against the rising cost of living. The pressure had become too great, action had to be taken before the fall. If you take a closer look, one thing remains as a “big relief”: the price for the motorway vignette will not be increased. After all, this saves 4.3 million motorists (both at home and abroad) no less than 14 euros per year. Or 1.16 euros per month.
The rent ceiling, on the other hand, although widely advertised, is of no use to anyone. And that’s why:
