May festivities in Krems – Babler: turn “tea lights” back into flames

Date:

Andreas Babler, one of three candidates for the SPÖ presidency, described his party as an “alternative to the political system of petitioners” during the May Day celebrations in Krems on Monday. In recent years, the SPÖ has been “just a tea light”, “we have to see that we become a flame again”.

Authentic language and an offer for non-voters are needed. “We have to be an offensive counter-model for petitioners,” he said at the Volkshuis during the May 1 celebration in Krems-Lerchenfeld. What he means by this, he explained in the fight against “modern slavery”. For example, stricter controls and higher penalties for wage and social dumping are needed. Companies must also be accountable to their subcontractors. Babler says he has “a lot of tax ideas” such as wealth taxation and closing tax loopholes.

Working time reduction, climate change
Other topics of his speech included short-time work, health and climate change. For example, graduates of medical school could be required to work initially in the field of panel doctors. It is important to ensure that there are enough panelists. “Modern afternoon care” is necessary for children, also for financially weaker households, as well as “a warm and healthy meal a day”.

With regard to climate change, Babler stated that millions of people have been systematically forced to flee “because they can no longer feed themselves”. The question is not whether you can still swim in Lake Neusiedl, but about the “ecological catastrophe” behind it.

The celebration began shortly after 9 a.m. with a flag-carrying march through the Lerchenfeld district. In addition to Babler, the mayor of Krems Reinhard Resch and other party members also took part. 350 to 400 people were expected at the morning pint in front of the Volkshaus.

Babler was due to appear in his hometown of Traiskirchen (Baden district) at noon. 1500 to 2000 people were expected there. In the afternoon, the SPÖ candidate gives a speech at the celebration of Labor Day in Gerasdorf near Vienna (Korneuburg district). He is currently on tour for the member survey.
