ÖGB chairman Wolfgang Katzian is now also Europe’s leading trade unionist. He has clear words about inflation.
Wolfgang Katzian, head of the trade union in Austria, will also be elected European boss next week in Berlin. The 66-year-old from Lower Austria is at the peak of his abilities.
“What doesn’t happen are price cuts”
His words carry weight. Currently mainly with inflation and government measures. A package of measures followed a dust-free price top. Poor families with children will receive an extra 60 euros per month and child until the end of 2024. “The package is an important step in the fight against child poverty,” said Katzian. “But what doesn’t happen are price cuts.”
According to Statistics Austria, housing and energy prices recently increased by 14.7%. Food at 13.2%. “Prices have to come down. Both for food and for energy,” the president demands.
You have to intervene in the market. Because it causes distortions. The government shows little ambition for an exchange with the social partners. “It will be exciting at the next salary negotiations. How do I explain to people that everything is getting more expensive, but there are no adjusted wage increases? It certainly doesn’t play with us.”
