In connection with the alleged electoral fraud, there is an open police operation in which house searches are carried out in various places in Melilla.
The National Police today arrested several people in Melilla in connection with the alleged electoral fraud that could have been committed in the May 28 elections in the autonomous city with the postal vote. They have also conducted searches at various points in the border town, and the operation is still open.
According to data from the Interior Ministry, the post office had validated 11% of the 11,707 applications for mail-in voting in Melilla by next Monday for the 28-M election. The procedure is open until the 25th, three days before Election Day, so the number of 1,302 votes cast could still be revised upwards.
The possible election fraud in Melilla prompted the zone’s electoral council to require identification of every voter through DNI.
In the case of Melilla, applications to vote by mail represent 20% of the census, while in Spain as a whole this figure is about 3%. Both the government delegation and the Ministry of the Interior have guaranteed that the elections in this city will be fair, dispelling suspicions of electoral fraud.
