Attack on army – war in Sudan: fighting despite renewed ceasefire

Date:

Despite a renewed ceasefire, fighting between two rival military units in Sudan continued on Tuesday evening. A reporter on the scene reported that paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched an attack on an army air base north of the capital Khartoum shortly after the ceasefire began.

There were also airstrikes and artillery shelling in and around the capital on Tuesday night, according to media reports. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, however, the situation seemed calm for now.

Representatives of the Sudanese military and the RSF agreed on a ceasefire on Saturday to take effect at 9:45 p.m. Monday.

Both sides had signed a corresponding agreement, which was brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia.

The ceasefire was broken again and again
Orally agreed truces between the Army and the RSF had been broken repeatedly in the preceding weeks.

The power struggle in the country never ends
On April 15, a protracted power struggle in the country on the Horn of Africa escalated violently. The army, commanded by de facto President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is battling the paramilitary forces of former Vice President Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The two generals seized power together in 2021, but later fell apart.
