This is a measure that has already been passed in Melilla for the 28M municipal elections, due to suspicions of possible fraud.
The Central Voting Office (JEC) is considering recommending that the DNI or other authorized personal identification must be presented in order to vote by mail in the general election on July 23a measure that was already adopted last Sunday in Melilla for the municipal elections due to suspicions of a possible fraud after the allegations of theft of election documents and the ongoing investigation in this regard.
legislation requires identification with the DNI when requesting the ballot by mailbut it is no longer deemed necessary when that same voter exercises his right days or weeks later and delivers his vote to the post office.
But in case of Melillawhere applications for voting by mail shot to nearly 20% of the census and there were complaints about theft of the election documents that would be sent to the voters, they advised the electoral council of the autonomous city to ask the DNI when casting the vote by mail.
And the JEC approved the instruction and even extended the requirement of this extraordinary measure to all post offices from the rest of the Spanish state, although only for voters registered in Melilla.
Postal voter identification was also requested by some formations participating in the elections in Melilla, such as Vox, and also by the Directorate-General for Internal Policies.
In this context, and in anticipation of a more votes per mail Given Pedro Sánchez’s decision to hold elections during the holiday period, the Central Electoral Bureau is considering this generalize the requirement of the DNI for the July 23 elections.
