A Visit to Israel – Karoline Edtstadler: United against Jew-hatred

Date:

Fight against anti-Semitism: Austria honored as a “strong ally” in Tel Aviv. The head of the EU commission holds all states responsible for this, the FPÖ remains a red flag for Israel.

Dinner at Lala Land in Tel Aviv. We remember the musical, let time pass by. Actress Mia and jazz pianist Sebastian had a dream – the dream of a career in Hollywood. Today, 1,500 representatives from 60 countries at the “AJC Global Forum” on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel also have a dream – that of a world without anti-Semitism.

Among them is State Secretary Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP). She enters the convention stage in a green pantsuit. She doesn’t really get nervous. Especially since she’s been dealing with the issue of anti-Semitism for half her life (see video above on anti-Semitism strategy) and has been “punched” for it on social media.

This time goosebumps were her companions on stage. “It was one of the most important speeches of my life,” she says. “Relations between Israel and Austria have never been stronger than they are today. Austria’s commitment to the Jewish and democratic state of Israel is based on our historic responsibility.” European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas said: “Austria was one of the first countries to introduce the National Anti-Semitism Plan.”

Money for visiting a memorial
Another 13 states followed suit. For those EU countries that do not yet have an “anti-Jewish hate strategy”, the implementation period will end at the end of 2030. Back to Austria: 26 of the 38 measures from the anti-Semitism bundle have already been implemented – two of them in the past week (keyword: Prohibition Act and Badges of Honor Act – withdrawal of Nazi medals under review). In addition, an annual fund of 1.5 million will be established to fund visits to the Mauthausen Memorial for school classes.

Austria is welcomed here in Israel as an ally and friend. You never wanted anything to do with the FPÖ. That won’t change, they say. What remains is this dream in Lala Land on the beach in Tel Aviv. Edtstadler: “In the fight against anti-Semitism, we must act together. The whole of society.”
