On Monday afternoon, the director of a recycling company in Upper Styria called the police because radioactive material had been found in the waste. The investigation revealed that the nuclear waste in an Italian waste bale had been spotted on a truck during a routine check.
The bale of waste was secured in a separate room. Radiation detectors from the police and a radiation measurement technician from the Technical University of Graz determined that the waste of cancer drugs had not been disposed of properly. According to the police, the radioactive waste has been placed in a special container and is now being disposed of properly.
Fortunately, no people or the environment were affected by the incident.
