With the new SPÖ leadership, there could be movement in the climate laws. The Social Democrats, however, maintain their call for measures to combat inflation.
The change in leadership in the SPÖ (see video on personal details above) is showing its first political effects. The new club management is again prepared to negotiate with the government factions on two-thirds of matters they had recently blocked. However, the Reds continue to demand anti-inflation measures from the ÖVP and the Greens, accusing the coalition of inaction on climate protection.
In general, a number of constitutional laws are pending before parliament: the Renewable Heat Act, the amendment to the Prohibition Act and the Crisis Protection Act. The abolition of professional secrecy, which is currently being finalized, is a two-thirds matter.
SPÖ urges “social justice”
“We will negotiate any law hard and then pass laws if they don’t come at the expense of the general public and they actually improve people’s lives,” said new Vice Club boss and environmental spokeswoman Julia Herr. “For us, climate protection goes hand in hand with social justice,” says Herr.
When replacing oil and gas heating, for example, the costs may not be passed on to the tenants. The government must now prove that it is serious.
This also applies to climate protection. “This Monday, Austria has had no climate protection law for 900 days. That is a sign of inadequacy for the Greens,’ criticizes Herr. It will not be the SPÖ’s fault. “We are committed to climate neutrality by 2040.”
Turquoise-green reacts cautiously positively
The governing parties ÖVP and Greens reacted cautiously optimistically to the SPÖ’s announcement. “Words must now be followed by deeds,” said ÖVP club boss August Wöginger.
