Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will visit Austria at the invitation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. Bulgarian President Rumen Radev also accepted the chancellor’s invitation. Together they want to participate in the European Forum Wachau (next Saturday).
The Chancellor only visited Meloni in Rome in May and on this occasion extended the invitation to Austria. The meeting in the Wachau was now an “expression of friendly relations between Austria and Italy,” the Chancellor said on Monday. Last but not least, they want to use the date to coordinate common positions in the fight against illegal migration.
The chancellor last met President Radev on the sidelines of the European Political Community meeting in Moldova on June 1 – after a joint visit to the Bulgarian-Turkish border in January.
“Close Allies”
Austria and Italy, as well as Bulgaria, are “close allies” in the fight against illegal migration. Together with other partner countries, pressure had been exerted beforehand to get the subject on the agenda of the summit.
Nehammer explained in a statement to krone.at about the upcoming visit: “Austria and Italy are united by a strong alliance when it comes to fighting illegal migration. Cooperation in this area has also intensified considerably in recent months with Bulgaria. The asylum system in Europe has failed and that is why we are calling for a reform of the system, especially with regard to the protection of the external borders and cooperation with third countries. (…)” Asylum policy “must not continue as before”, the Chancellor concluded.
