The Supreme Court of Catalonia (TSJC) has ordered the Ministry of Education to carry out the sentence requiring at least 25% of class hours to be taught in Spanish within a maximum of 15 days.
The TSJC explained this Monday that the Minister of Education, Josep González-Cambrayto “provide instructions and establish audit guarantees” so that all students in the Catalan education system are taught at least 25% of class hours in Spanish.
The court made this decision at the request of the Meeting for a Bilingual School (AEB) to enforce the sentence.
The president of the Assembly for a Bilingual School, Ana Losada, believes that with the order of the TSJC “a giant step has been taken” to “end the violation of the language rights of Catalan students”.
The association’s president added that “the most important thing now is to have the tools to ensure that 25% of Spanish is achieved in all Catalan schools”.
“With today’s statement, we are reaching the end of a path that started 30 years ago,” said Ana Losada, for whom 25% of subjects are in Spanish “it’s just the beginning”
