Representatives of the Ministry of the Interior celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department at a ceremony on Tuesday. Above all, global challenges in the fight against crime over time were highlighted. “The classic bank robbery is dying out,” emphasized Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock, who was also invited.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) also referred to this on Tuesday. “We had the last bank robbery almost two months ago,” Karner said in a speech, referring to an April robbery in Feldkirch in Vorarlberg. However, this type of crime has now become a rarity, it said.
Austria as a pioneer in international networking
Because police today face challenges in three areas, Karner said. “Prevention and internationality, organized crime and people smuggling and cybercrime,” explains the minister. As Secretary General of Interpol, Stock mainly advocated international networking.
Austria has taken a pioneering role in this regard. Because the idea for a joint international DNA database came in 2003 from the head of the central identification service, Reinhard Schmid, of the federal criminal investigation department.
Clearance rate of 52 percent
The director-general for public security, Franz Ruf, particularly highlighted the clearing rate across Austria of 52 percent by 2022. This number is “a real success,” says Ruf.
