In eastern Austria, 500,000 schoolchildren received their annual report. Reason enough for the “crown” of the turquoise-green government to send their assessments. You will search in vain for real nerds.
With an average grade of 3.4, the government closes the school year with a modest average. The “Krone” handed out the numbers, Peter Filzmaier and Thomas Hofer contributed assessments from their point of view as political experts. Corona, war and inflation have not exactly given the turquoise-green coalition a tailwind, but analysts say there is still a lot of room for improvement. For example, Chancellor and ÖVP chairman Karl Nehammer must “show clearly where he wants to go next year”, says Hofer with a view to the elections for the National Council.
The individual qualities at a glance:
Kogler brings stability to the coalition
Hofer and Filzmaier describe Green Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler as an oasis of calm who has kept the government together. “But what else his own performance in crisis management against inflation remains unclear,” says professor of politics Filzmaier. ÖVP Minister of Agriculture Norbert Totschnig was noticed negatively or not at all.
Health Minister Johannes Rauch deserves credit for taking the risk to seriously reform the healthcare system in a difficult context between the federal and state governments. In addition, unlike its short-term predecessors, it exhibits considerable length. Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler testified to Filzmaier’s political courage. But she has poor sympathy values, Hofer adds.
