The internal criticism of Andreas Babler does not stop. After cross shots from the exchange shaft and the party’s resignation, Burgenland’s mayor and ex-Bundesrat president Günter Kovacs also denounced the course of the new SPÖ boss on various topics on Sunday. Club president Philip Kucher is now retaliating and calling for moderation.
Kovacs, representing the Burgenland SPÖ, had aligned his opposition with Babler on several points. So it “definitely won’t play” at 100 km/h on the highway, and cannabis legalization is “an absolute no-go,” Kovacs said in the ORF program “Hohes Haus”.
Kucher: From Team Doskozil to Team Babler
SPÖ club president Philip Kucher is not happy with his statements. “To be honest, I was personally annoyed,” Kucher, himself a former supporter of Burgenland’s governor and unsuccessful candidate for party chairmanship, Hans Peter Doskozil, told Ö1 “Morgenjournal” on Monday.
Kucher hopes for reconciliation
He would expect from everyone in the SPÖ that “after these difficult months, the democratic result should also be recognized and supported with a human touch, just like Pamela Rendi-Wagner, Andreas Babler and Hans Peter Doskozil.”
At the same time, Kucher promised that over the course of the promised summer tour, existing injuries and the need for clarification would be rectified. After the talks in the summer, there should be a major party conference in the autumn. In this case, they want to set the course together in terms of content, according to the club president.
SPÖ still far from unity
Not everyone in the party is satisfied with the new SPÖ party leader. The first resignations were recently announced, for example by the former chairman of the third state parliament and the Lower Austrian club president Alfredo Rosenmaier. To him, Babeler is a communist. Just a few hours after Babler was confirmed as head of the SPÖ in early June, the West Axis hit its first pins. The first cross shot came from Salzburg – other federal states followed. This SPÖ is clearly still far from unity.
