Between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, about 150,000 liters of manure leaked from a cesspit in Eberschwang and ended up in a nearby stream. A technical defect is said to be the cause of the environmental disaster in Upper Austria.

When the 28-year-old owner noticed this, he alerted the fire brigade and police and tried to prevent more manure from ending up in the stream, the Upper Austrian reports. police on Monday.

The liquid manure had already passed from the Ötzlinger Bach into the Vockinger Bach and further into the Antiesen and the Mühlbach in Hohenzell. About 13 firefighters from the Hohenzell and St. Marienkirchen am Hausruck fire brigade tried to prevent consequential damage.

District authority confirms fish kill
According to the Ried district administration, there are already reports of fish kills in the region. However, it was possible to close off the inflow to some fish ponds fed by the stream and thus protect it.
