The Senate on Wednesday approved a motion rejecting the 1937 bombing of Gernika, a two-point text asking the government first of all to recognize the responsibility of the rebel army and the subsequent Franco government in the attack, damage and suffering caused by the bombing of Gernika on April 26, 1937, as a symbol of all air raids on the civilian population.

The text contains the second point that the Spanish Senate rejects the bombing of Gernika by the Franco rebels and their allies against the people of the Villa, the legitimate government of the Second Spanish Republic and the Basque government. It also urges the government of Spain, in the context of the democratic memory actions in defense of coexistence and freedom, perform an explicit action in memory of the suffering inflicted on the city of Gernika and its inhabitants, that contributes to the shelter and recovery

The motion was approved with 144 votes from the PNV, the PSOE, EH Bildu, the Catalan and left-wing parties; 103 against from senators from the PP and Vox, and one abstention.

In the original text, the PNV demanded an apology from the Spanish government for the bombing of Gernika. Then yesterday afternoon they negotiated the alternative text that was finally approved, a text that does not include this aspect, although it urges the government “an explicit reminder of the damage to the city of Gernika and its inhabitants that contributes to emergency and recovery”.

The PSOE has repeatedly made it clear that the government cannot take responsibility for those events The new wording therefore does not include this aspect, although it condemns the bombings.

The PNV appreciates that the Spanish government has sent a representation for the first time this year to commemorate the bombing of Gernika, but Jeltzale’s spokeswoman in the Senate, Estefanía Beltrán de Heredia, asked for more.
