Wind turbines would come – Tyrol: the political wind has now turned!

Date:

In Anton Mattle (ÖVP), the Tyrolean People’s Party got a man at the top last year who was less opposed to wind turbines than his predecessor – and who could even imagine one or the other wind farm. Now is the time. A new wind potential study shows where wind turbines are possible in Tyrol and where their potential lies, the government has given the green light.

Not so long ago it was said that on the Tyrolean mountains there was only room for summit crosses and no wind turbines, but now it is completely different. Governor Mattle speaks of a turnaround, so the government is now giving the green light to wind turbines.

800 to 1200 gigawatt hours
According to a study of the wind potential, three to five percent of Tyrol’s electricity needs could be covered by wind energy, i.e. 800 to 1200 gigawatt hours. “Theoretically, it would take 140 to 160 wind turbines to generate this amount of energy,” the country says.

In addition to high valleys and mountain ridges, ski resorts would also be ideal for installing wind turbines. They can cover up to 15 percent of the wind energy potential.

According to LH Mattle, Tyrol aims to “become independent from oil and gas” and to “supply its energy needs from all available renewable sources by 2050″. “Hydropower and photovoltaics are the backbone of the Tyrolean energy transition. Wind energy alone will not save us, but we cannot do without wind energy either. An energy mix with the full potential of renewable energy in Tyrol is needed,” emphasizes the provincial head.

100,000 euro premium for the first wind turbine in Tyrol
Municipalities and individuals are now being called upon to install wind turbines. Of course, that doesn’t work everywhere: a minimum of five meters per second or an average wind speed of 18 km/h at 100 meters above the ground is required to run a wind turbine economically.

The wind measurements are financed by the government with a total of 300,000 euros. There is a prize of 100,000 euros for the first wind turbine in Tyrol. Ten projects are in the pipeline.
