Austria’s participation in the European Sky Shield initiative, which will be signed on Friday as part of a letter of intent in Bern, will require additional weapons systems for the home army in the future: “As already known, new medium-range missiles will be purchased to effectively support the initiative to be able to perform,” says Paul Tikal, editor-in-chief of kroon.at, in a TV interview with Gerhard Koller.
The armed forces currently do not have the necessary weapon systems, which is why a financing framework of approximately 1.8 billion euros is required for the corresponding purchase. The participation of neutral Switzerland in Sky-Shield now also helps Austria to answer the question of whether this initiative is compatible with neutrality.
Participating is a “big step”
By the way, other participating countries are currently being sought: according to the current status, 17 countries are likely to be ready to join the new European defense initiative – including Austria. According to Tikal, Friday’s “Letter of Intent” is now a “big step”, after which concrete planning and implementation work will be carried out.
But Austria will want to decide for itself when defensive weapons are used and when not. The use of weapons aimed “from the outside” is difficult to imagine in practice.
